Firemen Get Hero Medals
Three members of the New York fire department -Captain Henry Eakestream, of the fireboat Thomas Willett; Herbert FY Whitcomb, pilot, and Patrick J. Barry, a fireman attached to the fireboat William L. Strong—have been presented with medals for bravery in saving human life. The medals were given by the Life Savers’ Benevolent Association, and were handed to the men by Deputy Fire Commissioner Olvany. Captain l.akestream. on September 20, 11*12. saved the life of Julius R. Chadwick, of Wilmington, N. C. Young Chadwick had gone to sleep on a pier and rolled off into the river. Whitcomb aided in the rescue. Barry rescued Frank Eldorado, who had jumped into the river. Barry had i hard fight with the frantic man, but finally dragged him from the water.
