FIREMEN QUIT UNION

Peoria, Ill.—Notice from the Peoria firemen was recently received by the board of fire and police commissioners, that the local men have decided to dissolve the firemen’s union and to return their charter to headquarters of the International Association of Fire Fighters at Washington, D. C.

The step by the firemen has been contemplated for some weeks past and dissolution of the organization was not brought about or hastened in the least by the recent dissolving of the policemen’s union, according to the notice.

“Because of the fact that public opinion seems to hold that fire departments are not justified in holding charters as labor organizations, and as we as firemen are servants of the public, we feel that we must be guided by this opinion,” is the reason given for turning in the charter.
