First Instalment, N. Y. Firemen’s Raise Jan. 1
The first instalment of the $2,500 salary which the members of the New York City fire department were given by the referendum vote on election day last, it is expected, will be paid in the middle of January. The court action begun by Stewart Browne on behalf of the Real Estate Owners Association has been withdrawn on the ground of the assurance that under the home rule amendment to the state constitution there could be no other such referendum. It being asserted previous to election day if that the referendum was passed it would not be binding upon the city authorities, the Uniformed Firemen’s Association and Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association together obtained a legal opinion that showed the law would be valid if passed. Comptroller Craig since that time has publicly stated that there are funds in the city’s treasury to meet the increase and it is said that Acting Mayor Hulbert is friendly to the raise for the firemen.
