Fla. Fire Officers Certified
Twelve Florida fire fighters have been awarded fire officer certification, the first issued by the Florida Fire Fighters Standards Council, the state agency responsible for certifying all paid Florida fire fighters.
Eleven graduates of the certification course, which started on July 9, 1973 and ended last March 19, were from the Daytona Beach Fire Department and one was from the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department. All attended classes on off-duty time at their own expense.
The course consisted of 180 hours of instruction in fire company supervision and management, fireground supervision and management, public relations, fire prevention tactics and instructor training. It will count in credits toward educational incentive pay.
Graduates of the course included Assistant Chief Robert Dittman; Captain Sam Roberts; Lieutenants William Hoyer, Joseph Thompson and Jack Ransom; Driver Engineers Jerry Strange, Orville Ashe, Marlin Bennett, George Sewell, Wayne Swartzfager and Norman Lewis, all of Daytona Beach, and Captain Huston Toole of New Smyrna Beach.
