Forest Fire Costs Up
Expenses for the 1958 forest fire season on federal lands exceeded the appropriations allowed and as a consequence, the House and Senate have approved $4,500,000 additional funds for the current fiscal year.
Total burned area of forest and range land under control of the Department of Interior was 5,220,070 acres. Of this amount, 403 Alaskan fires destroyed 4,839,281 acres.
