Former Chief Eli Bates Married.
Eli Bates, who was for more than ten year, a chief of the fire department of New York city, has been married for the past two week. The fact of the marriage became known when Mrs. Bates told several of her friends “in confidence.” The bride was Mrs. Nellie McBride, who had been acting as housekeeper for Bates for some time.
Former Chief Bates is eighty-two years old end his bride about forty-seven. After Bates retired in 1S84 he moved to Hoboken, and some later engaged Mrs. McBride as housekeeper in his home at No. 725 Washington street. Despite his age he fell in love with Mrs. McBride and some time ago proposed marriage, and it was agreed they should be quietly wedded. Accordingly on February 18 last they went to the office of Justice of the Peace Budendenger and were married. They requested the justice to keep the matter quiet, and he did so, and it was not until today that the marriage became known. Mr. Bates said the other day he had been in very poor health since Christmas; but that he is improving. He bus three married daughters and a son, but aid he had been living alone and he needed a companion. He joined the volunteer department April 29, 1846. and on December 6, 1865, became a member of the paid department. He has a very comfortable home and draws a pension of $2,550 a year.
