FORMER FIRE CHIEF CAMPBELL SICK.
Former Fire Chief Joseph Campbell, Elmira, N. Y., has been dangerously ill, and, though still a very sick man, has improved some what of late. Chief Campbell is a man in every way popular both with the fire department and with his fellow citizens. He became a member of the old volunteer corps in 1864, and in time became its chief. For four years he retired from the ranks of the firefighters, but re-entered city service after the paid department had been established. For several years he performed the duties of chief with perfect satisfaction all round and was retired some time ago at his own request. As a former chief and a good fireman, if spared and sufficiently recovered to be present, he will receive a hearty welcome at the convention of the New York State Firemen’s association, which will meet in Elmira during the week of August 20.
