Former New Jersey Firefighter Pleads to Lesser Charge in Fatal Crash

A former Wayne (NJ) volunteer firefighter had plead guilty to a lesser charge in a case in which he was accused of causing a fatal crash while en route to an emergency incident, a report says.

The Record reported that Daniel Lane, 26, said in Paterson Superior Court that he was at home on December 23, 2010 when he received a call about a house fire in which some residents were apparently trapped. Lane said he jumped into his car and sped toward a township firehouse, and had activated strobe lights on his car.

According to the report, Lane said he exceeded the speed limit and was moving between lanes to avoid traffic before he eventually collided with a delivery van and caused it to flip. The driver, Eugene Harkins, 63, was injured and reportedly died a week later.
