From the Fire Engineering Vault: The Growth of FDIC

The annual Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) is a major event for the fire service in North America, bringing together tens of thousands of firefighters, instructors, and manufacturers to keep up with the latest developments, tactics, and equipment in the firefighting industry. But the show wasn’t always so huge, as evidenced by today’s find in the Fire Engineering vault.

A write-up on the convention from the February 1939 issue of Fire Engineering notes how the show’s importance has grown over the years. “This conference has grown to assume a position of tremendous importance in the promotion and achievement of fire service educational work,” the article reads. Then only in its eleventh year, the conference was held in Memphis, Tennessee, and brought together fire instructors from 28 states.
