Furniture Fire in Des Moines

The recent fire in Des Moines, by which a loss of $96,000 was incurred, has been reported for this publication by Chief Will Burnett, as follows: “The building, which was owned by F. M. Hubbell & Son and occupied by Davidson’s Furniture Company, was located at s. w. corner of Sixth and Wagner streets, on a ground area 100×132 feet. It was two stories in height, of brick and wood construction. The fire started on first floor near center of building from an unknown cause. Telephone alarm was given at 4:07 p. m. It was discovered by an employee and they attempted to handle it themselves before turning in an alarm, consequently when the department arrived the fire had spread over a large area to upper floor through open elevator shaft. Owing to the nature of stock it was a stubborn fire to fight, but was put under control in about two hours. The department used 7,250 feet of hose on 15 hydrant lines, two of which were supported by pumper. Value of ‘building $25,000, loss $15,000; value of stock $125,000, loss $81,200.”
