The total number of valves in the Joplin, Mo., water system is about 390. They are of Ludlow make and, with the exception of six, open to the left. All are direct-acting and are operated through iron gate boxes Valves are generally located near street intersections upon the property lines; one set of detail locations is kept for field use. The average length of main which would be shut out of service in consequence of a single break in the principal mercantile district is 800 feet, with a maximum of 2,600 feet, and nine out of 32 lengths exceeding 900 feet; in a representative residential district, the average length was found to be 1,950 feet, with a maximum of 4,200 feet and five out of 40 lengths exceeding 1,500 feet. The average spacing on mains 10 and 12 inches in diameter is 1,300 feet.
