GOOD WORK IN FIREPROOF BUILDING.
Sprinklers and modern construction recently did good work at Macy’s department store, Manhattan, New York, and about 3,000 shoppers did not know of the fire until it was out, notwithstanding that it was of dangerous proportions. It started in a storeroom on the south side of the sixth floor. The fireproof doors were closed promptly and the sprinklers did the rest. There was no panic and hundreds of customers were so little disturbed by the engine gongs, that they did not leave the store at all. “The case (says a contemporary) furnishes emphatic evidence of the good results to be obtained by co-operation between owners and insurance engineers.”
