Grass Fire in the Sky

Grass Fire in the Sky

One recent morning Assistant Chief Howard Willard, North Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department, was proceeding to his office at about 7:30 a.m. While passing through the downtown business section he noticed flames on the roof of an office building. Fire companies responding to his alarm were amazed to find they had a grass fire on their hands.

Apparently grass and weed seeds had been deposited on the roof by the wind and had sprouted in dirt accumulations. Growing unnoticed the grass was almost knee high over a 40-square-foot area.

Chief Willard commented that he has fought all kinds of grass fires in his career but this was his first experience in combatting such a blaze on the top of an office building.
