GREATER NEW YORK FIRE DEPARTMENT.
The estimate of the fire department of Greater New York has just been published. Commissioner Sturgis asks for an increase of $270,079.58. The greatest increase requested is for two new fireboats to cost $75,000 each. An increase is also desired of more than $40,000 for salaries, a large part of which is mandatory, and about $14,000 for apparatus. The recapitulation of the estimate is as follows: Headquarters pay. $92,327, of which $62,686 is for Manhattan, the Bronx, and Richmond boroughs, and $214,041 for Brooklyn and Queens: chief’s bureau pay. $185,350. of which $94,250 is for the first three boroughs, and $91,100 for the other two; bureau of combustibles. $42,500. divided as above into two lump sums of $24,800 and $17,700; engines, hook and ladder trucks, $3,701,214, divided as above, $2,082,259 and $1,618,955: fire marshal’s bureau. $30,100. divided as above, $18,200 and $11,900: fire alarm telegraph. $91,340. divided as above. $64,637 and $26.702; repair shops. $115,100. divided as above. $75.971 and $39,129: hospital and training stables. $20.174. divided as above. $13,422 and $6,752: building (super.). $25,940. for the first three boroughs only— total for the above. $4,304,047. divided as above. $2.162.167 and $1,841,880.
