The deadline for Ground Zero workers to accept the settlement with New York City proposed by the $7.4 billion Zadroga 9/11 health bill is today. Approximately 85 percent of the plaintiffs have already agreed to accept the settlement, but news sources indicate that there may be a last-minute rush to sign on to the settlement. The agreement ultimately requires 95 percent of the workers to sign on for the deal to move forward. The workers who don’t sign on will have to pursue individual lawsuits against New York City.
The House has already passed the Zadroga bill, and Senate passage is expected shortly. The plaintiffs include firefighters, police, and other workers who operated in Lower Manhattan at the site of the World Trade Center in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
