HAMELESS STEEL HORSE COLLARS
So far as is known, Alexander Thomson, of Fitchburg, Mass., is the only manufacturer of steel horse-collars in the United States. This distinction has been gained only by perseverance and hard work. The steel collar was bitterly opposed when it first made its appearance in the market. This, with the general prejudice of the public, would have discouraged most men; but its manufacturer never lost faith in the ultimate triumph of the steel collar, which he has greatly improved since he began to put out his product. The adoption of this collar for the United States artillery service, and, also, by many large cities throughout the country for fire-department service, has carried the business on to a successful issue. There is now a well-equipped plant for its manufacture, which has turned out to be a prosperous business. The owner of the factory is a man of wide experience and has an enviable reputation in the manufacture of boiler-makers’ tools, many of his patents on machinery being in use and highly esteemed today; but he now devotes his attention almost exclusively to the manufacture of the steel horse-collar.
