Henry W. Ross Dead
Henry W. Ross, who was retired from the Springfield, Mass., fire department last June, after 50 years of service, died October 21. at a hospital, aged 72 years. He was taken ill last March, and when he retired he went to the hospital, where he remained until his death. He leaves no near relatives. Mr. Ross was horn at Bhtckstone. Mass., October 11, 1842, and went to Springfield when twelve years old. and resided there ever since He learned the machinists trade at the it rmorv anil the Smith and Wesson works, where he was employed for some years When a young man. in 1903. he entered the fire department as a call member and in 1872 entered the permanent force and was for many vrars engineer of sram fire engines and located at several stations, lie was frequently detailed for repair work on other engines and was considered one of the ablest fire engine experts in the country. He devised and natented several devices for fire engines, hut never placed any of them on the market, although all were used and were a success.
