IMPORTANT TO ADVERTISERS.
There is a certain advertising agent in New York soliciting advertising for a pamphlet for the convention of the American Waterworks association This individual promises an enormous circulation of this flyer but in reality there are only 3,500 people to reach who are interested in the waterworks field in the United States The proceeds of the advertising this agent may secure go to himself, and the surplus, after paying expenses, to the local committee at St Louis.
The question is, How much does the local commitee get? As the special edition of FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING for the convention will contain portraits of all the officers of the association and a large number of the members, besides waterworks articles on construction, management, filtration, meterage and all questions of distribution, it will be waste of money to invest in an unknown quantity.
At Pawnee City, Neb., in a fire which broke out on May 2 in the animal train of Campbell Brothers’ circus a large part of the menagerie was destroyed, among the animals burned being three large elephants, four camels, two grizzly bears, three water buffaloes and a number of ring horses. The fire originated in a car of hay in the centre of the train, and burned both ways. The animals became wild with fright when the smoke penetrated their cages, and pandemonium prevailed. Fearing the beasts would break from their cages, the crowd of sightseers became panic stricken, and fled in all directions. The burned animals were insured.
