INCREASE OF WATER RATES AT RATON.
The Raton, N. M., Water company has doubled arbitrarily, as it is claimed, the water rates, the maximum having previously been raised. The company has been fined $1,000 by the council, on the ground that it has violated its contract with the city by furnishing impure and unwholesome water and threatens to revoke the franchise. The source of supply, the Sugarite, never affords very good water, but it is alleged that the reservoir, which is not cemented, has not been cleaned since 1892, the result being filthy and evil-smelling contents. Many citizens have refused to pay water rates and will not permit the company to shut off the water. The council seems to have the company at its mercy, and the trouble may possibly end in the city taking over the plant.
