Increased Salary for Newark Chief
The salary of Chief Engineer Paul J. Moore, of Newark, N. J., has been increased from $1,000 to $5,000 by the fire board. This action had been contemplated for several years, and was postponed twice because of the death of two incumbents—the late Chiefs Astley and Sloan. The increase given to Chief Moore will date from March 15. Three auto runabouts have been purchased from Henry Heinzheimer, a brother-inlaw of Commissioner Matthias Stratton. The machines are to be used by Chief Moore and Deputy Chiefs John Towey and Matthew P. A. McDermitt. Mr. Heinzheimer’s bid was one of the three submitted, all being for $2,000 for each machine. The bid of Alexander Brunner Company was rejected when it was first received a week ago because it was not accompanied by a bond, and the proposal was not signed. The S. and M. Motor Company submitted a bid on the Havers car of six cylinders and 55 horsepower, and Mr. Heinzheimer bid on Palmer-Singer cars of 45 horsepower and six cylinders.
