Laboratories of Chicago Underwriters.
Not many years ago the Fire Underwriters of Chicago started a laboratory in the third floor of an enginehonse. The working staff consisted of W. H. Merrill and one boy. Today there are employed eight mechanical, four electrical, one civil, one chemical and two gas and oil engineers, in addition to the clerical and manager’s staff. So highly is the indorsement of the laboratory considered by manufacturers producing goods entering into fire-prevention or its extinguishment, that models are constantly being sent it of products which it is proposed to place upon the market. For work of this nature a charge is imposed, and last year the income was in excess of $92,000.
