Large Pneumatic Tires for Trucks
One of the new things in the Motor Truck Show in Madison Square Garden and the Sixty-ninth Regiment Armory, New York City, is a pneumatic tire, 44 by 10 inches, fitted to a three-and-one-half-ton truck. It is the largest automobile tire ever made, and is the latest production of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Two of these huge tires, which with the tubes and rim weigh approximately 250 pounds apiece, are attached to the rear wheels of the truck while the front ones have 38 by 7 pneumatics. These enormous pneumatic tires indicate the trend which has been developing toward the use of Pneumatic tires for heavy trucks and apparatus. The advantages claimed are greater speed and less vibration, but with the use of better springs the vibration, and consequent injury to the load, have been materially reduced on the trucks using solid rubber tires. The prevailing opinion among the dealers and engineers at the show is that the big pneumatics are not likely to be extensively used for some time.
