LAURENCE FIRE DEPARTMENT.
The report of the fire department of Laurence, Douglas county, Kans., states that the population of the city is 11,000; fire area, 1,500 acres; buildings, brick and stone, two stories; private, wood, two stories; wooden roofs not permitted in fire limits; firework ordinance. In the fire department are one steam fire engine; one hook and ladder truck; two hose carriages; hose, cotton, good, 3,000 feet; four horses—value $600. The value of the fire department equipment is $10,000; value of buildings occupied, $2,000. The total annual expenses of the department amount to $3,500. The total membership is fourteen; paid full time, two; part time, twelve; telephone and bell alarm. There are 500 telephones. W. F. Reinisch is now chief of the department. F. W. Doane is assistant chief. There were thirty-nine alarms last year.
