The captain, Sam Allen, who was the only one on board, said he was hauling lobster traps on the 28-foot Dawn Breaker when a fire that broke out in the wheel house.

Allen immediately radioed a mayday to the United States Coast Guard, donned his emergency suit, and secured a waterproof survival bag with supplies, a portable radio and deployed an emergency beacon.

He finally grabbed some buoys for flotation and jumped into the 52-degree water to escape the fire.

He was picked up by another boat about 15 minutes later. He did not require medical attention.

“I’m good. Thank you,” Allen said when he got back to the Town Wharf.
