On May 1 the members of the Schenectady fire department handed to Commissioner of Public Safety Smith the sum of $284.50, with instructions to send same to San Francisco, Cal., for the purpose of aiding or assisting any fireman who may be in need.
Vacations have been approved by the commissioner of public safety, commencing June 1 and ending October 17. Privates are allowed ten days, captains two weeks and chief three weeks. Vacations are assigned by a representative from each house drawing from a hat at headquarters, No. 1 having first selection, No. 2 second, and so on. There are five men allowed off at each time, excepting from the 1st to the 5th of July.
Schenectady has just received a new engine connection to hydrant. It is in the shape of a wishbone, the purpose of which is for use where hydrants arc not equipped with engine connections, so that both connections of hydrant can he used at one time. This contrivance is simple and inexpensive and is made of regular suction hose.
The performance given on April 25 by Neil Burgess in “The County Fair” for the benefit of the firemen’s relief fund netted the firemen $819.
Schenectady is about to build another enginehouse in the eastern portion of the city, which is to he equipped with a second-class steamer and a combination wagon.
