Los Angeles (CA) Names New Fire Chief

Veteran Los Angeles firefighter Brian Cummings has been appointed Fire Chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department by the city Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, according to a report from LATimes.com.

He was notified by the mayor of the appointment earlier this weekend who planned to make a official announcement today. The 52 year old veteran joined the fire department in 1980 and has been serving as the interim chief for the last two months.

Cummings stood in support of the controversial 2011 redeployment plan to reorganize fire resources which did not result in layoffs, but called for many fire trucks, ambulances and dozens of the city’s fire stations to be closed. This plan cut $54 million from the department’s 2011-12 budget earning him praise and respect from the mayor.
