LYNN, MASS., FIRE DEPARTMENT.
At Lynn, Mass., during 1896 there were 191 bell alarms, seventy-one stills, forty-five automatic, and thirteen for out of town—total 320. The number of fires attended with a partial loss was 155, four were total, and seventy seven had no loss. The value of the property risked was $1,150,021.65; damage to property exposed, $58,168.39; insurance on property exposed, $994,176; insurance paid, $52,004.77. One new building, the engine house on Commercial street, was erected during the year, and a new hose wagon is being built for engine 5, which is to occupy the new houseI he receipts of the department were$81,425.25; the expenditures, $79,078.25. Chief Downing has seen to it that the apparatus of the department as well as its discipline is in first-class order. Lynn’s fire department has always had a high reputation. Its hiremen’s Relief Association continues to be in a prosperous condition financially.
