According to the annual report of State Insurance Commissioner, J. W. Blunt of Maine, there were 2,358 fires in that state last year, against 2,544 for the preceding year, a decrease of 146. The estimated value of the buildings where the fires occurred during the past year was $12,621,744.00 against $11,654,965.00 for the preceding year, an increase of $66,779. The damage to the buildings where the fires occurred during the past year amounted to $1,847,792.00 against $1,780,891.00 for the preceding year, an increase of $66,901.00 The insurance upon the buildings was $11,058,580.00 against $11,361,256.00 for the preceding year, a decrease of $307,676.00. The estimated value of the contents of the building was $5,856,558.00 against 4,047,072.00 for the preceding year an increase of $309,481.00. The damage to the contents of the buildings was $l,05o,188.00 against $1,225,507.00 for the preceding year, a decrease of $167,319.00. The insurance upon the contents of the buildings was $4,982,498.00 against $2,847,100.00 for the preceding year, an increase of $2,135,398.00. The insurance paid on the contents during the past year amounted to $693,328.00 against $689,296.00 for the preceding year, an increase of $4,032.00.
