Many Apply to Head Toronto Fire Department

The Board of Control of Toronto has received 19 appl ications for the position as head of the fire department to succeed Chief Thompson. Many of these are from fire chiefs of other cities in Canada. As has been mentioned in a re ccnt issue of this journal, Deputy Chief Noble, who had been selected for the position, resigned from the department. Wetmore, Chief, Sault S te Marie, Ont.; Leslie G. Finch, Chief, Guelph, , Ont.; Alexander Gunn, North Toronto; Wm . J. Smith, Acting Deputy Chief, Toronto; Jam ies Corbett, Chief Private Brigade, MasseyHarris Co., Toronto; Wallace T. James, Assist ant Chief, Hamilton, Ont.; A. Forrest, Chief Private Brigade, Quaker Oats Co., Peterbori 3, Ont.; R. Topping, West Toronto; Captain McLean, Dundas St. Station, Toronto; W.P. Betz, newspaperman, Toronto; W. Burgess, ex-Alderman, Toronto; Alfred Cuddy, Chief of Police, Calgary, Alta.; Arthur J. Evcrist, Fi re Captain, Toronto; Thos. F. Sylvester, To ronto; Geo. H. Hill, Toronto; Col. J. G. Lan gton, Toronto. Before going to Victoria six years ago Chief Davis was a membcr of the Toronto department for 26 years. Chief Armstrong, of Kingston, is also a former Toronto fireman. No selection has yet been made.
