Marine Supply Building Destroyed
A four-alarm fire on the morning of March 8, destroyed the four-story brick building occupied by Johnson & Towers, Inc., Ship Chandlers.
The fire was discovered by a private watchman who went a half block to pull box 91, which was received by the fire department at 1:50 a. m.
When the first companies arrived at the box, they had to look around for the fire because the private watchman had gone back to it.
When the fire was located and sized up, the chief ordered a second alarm at 2:10 a. m., the third at 2:14 a. m., and the fourth at 2:18 a. m.
The building was neither sprinklered nor had a standpipe system, with the result that over half of the building was totally destroyed.
