Masks Must Be Used in N.Y.

Use of breathing apparatus in the New York Fire Department will be “absolutely mandatory” according to Fire Commissioner Edward F. Cavanagh, Jr.

The Commissioner recently told a large group of probationary firemen that he intends to get 1,000 more breathing devices and said he is tired of seeing an “all-too-frequent, tragic” sight of fire fighters overcome at fires.

“We have come to the end of the road of complacency as far as smoke poisoning is concerned” the Commissioner concluded, adding that the department’s new year-round training program in the use of masks will shortly be inaugurated.
