Matches Prohibited at Oil Wells
The prohibiting of the use of “strike anywhere” matches about oil wells, tanks and traps has been enforced by one of the major California oil companies, and as a result, the company has a notable low fire loss record. The Bureau of Mines of the U. S. Department of Commerce warns against the practice of smoking, carrying matches and lights about such territory.
Not only are kerosene lanterns hazardous because of their liability to tip over, but the light from these lanterns is very much inferior to that of the electric flashlights. Many companies, have for years furnished electric lanterns to the men who have occasion to use portahle lights, and immediately there was a reduction in the number of fires.
