Memphis Hotel Trash Chute Fire

Memphis Hotel Trash Chute Fire

A two-alarm fire in the Sheraton-Peabody Hotel in Memphis raced from the basement trash paper room through the trash chute to the roof. Some 450 guests fled to the street shortly after 2 p.m. last November 12, and Chief Edward A. Hamilton reported that “some water and smoke damage took place but no excessive damage.” Guests later returned to their rooms, and the hotel, which is familiar to thousands of firemen who have attended the Fire Department Instructors Conferences, continued to operate. The famed ducks swam placidly in the lobby pool while the fire was being extinguished.
