Millions of Dollars in Cuts for Kansas City (MO) Fire Department

The Kansas City (MO) City Council passed a budget that means millions of dollars in cuts for the Kansas City Fire Department. Different news reports put the figure at $7.6 M or $6.7 M–either number being a staggering amount.

The Kansas City Star reported (http://bit.ly/Hs4JDk) that a majority of council members maintained that the fire department can get by on less money without seriously imperiling public safety. The city and the firefighters union must now negotiate how many jobs will be lost; the city manager said the department could make the cuts by laying off 105 firefighters.
