Moore Named Deputy Chief at Newark.
Battalion Chief Paul J. Moore has been named deputy chief of the Newark, N. J., fire department. His name was first on the list of eligibles, as furnished by the civil service commission. The appointment took effect January 1. The names of Battalion Chiefs McDermitt and Towey will remain on the eligible list. In the event of Chief Sloan’s retirement. Moore will be made chief of the department. and a new deputy may be appointed from the two names remaining. Battalion Chief Hermann Schweickhardt was barred taking the recent examinations because he had served less than a year as a division commander. His year is now up and there is a probability that the civil service authorities will give him an opportunity to take examinations, which, if he passes, will enable him to take his place with McDermitt and Towey. Moore was born forty-three years ago in Newark. He joined the fire department on November 1. 1892, and was assigned to Engine No. 2. On August 10, 1899, he was made a lieutenant, and aMy 1, 1901, a captain and placed in charge of Engine No. 12. He was promoted to battalion chief on March 15. 1907. Three times his name has been placed on the roll of honor and he has never been before the board on charges.
