Much N. Y. F. D. Equipment Obsolete

Speaking before the Board of Directors of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, January 23rd, New York City’s new Fire Commissioner, Frank J. Quayle, Jr., made known that over twenty per cent of the city’s fire-fighting equipment is classed as obsolete.

On the strength of this, and other needs developed by surveys of the department, the Commissioner and the new Acting Fire Chief Frank Murphy, have appealed for a $2,400,000 increase in funds for the department for 1946. This will permit the addition of 1501 firemen to reestablish the three-platoon system throughout the department, and the addition of much needed apparatus and equipment.
