MUST PAY FOR FIRE SERVICE.
In the future manufacturers and others not living within the limits of Trenton, N. J., who want the services of the local fire department will be compelled to pay for the same, as the fire commissioners have declared that those paying city taxes should first be looked after in fire matters. On several occasions the department has been put to an expense in answering alarms outside the city limits. The calling away of the department endangers the city, should a fire break out. In answering an outside alarm a short time ago, one of the horses attached to an engine was made lame, and No. 4 engine was damaged through gravel becoming clogged in the suction of the apparatus. The wear and tear on the engines in going a long distance causes extra expense to the fire board, and the latter decided to place a charge for such services to those outside of the city. A bill for such will be sent by the board according to the services rendered. At the time of the fire alluded to two local engines were away from the city for several hours. At a fire at the same plant about a month before the department rendered several hours service. The scheme of charging for outside service is in effect in many of the larger cities.
