N.Y.F.D. Forms Personnel Division
The New York Fire Department has formed a Division of Uniformed Personnel to increase efficiency in handling its 11,414 officers and men. The new unit is headed by Deputy Chief Thomas A. McCoy, who has been in charge of the Fire Headquarters Office.
The Division was established in line with recommendations made by the Mayor’s Committee on Management Survey to combine in one place personnel functions previously scattered throughout the department. Filing of disciplinary, pension and service record, examination of recruits, and “wiser use” of personnel, particularly limited service personnel, are some of the duties to be coordinated in the Division.
Acting Deputy Chief John P. Oakley will succeed Chief McCoy as deputy in charge of office. Assistant Chief Edward Connors will represent Fire Chief Peter Loftus on the Board of Standards and Appeals, succeeding Timothy P. Guinee, retired.
