The North American Fire Training Directors (NAFTD), which represents state and provincial fire service training directors, will hold its annual spring meeting on Friday, April 23 at FDIC 2010. The NAFTD holds its spring meeting in conjunction with FDIC because it attracts so many of its members, according to Gabliks Eriks, NAFTD president and director, Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. ”The location is easy to access by airlines across North America, and FDIC is the place where everyone involved in fire service training goes to sharpen their knowledge on current issues,” explains Eriks.
The meeting will take place on Friday, April 23, 2010, 1:00 pm -5:00 pm, Room 206-207. It will be open only to members and invited guests such as Dr. Denis Onieal, superintendent of the National Fire Academy. Attendees will receive updates on the federal fire programs and share in various committee reports. Agenda items typically include topics pertinent to managing a state, provincial, or territorial training program.
Collectively, NAFTD members reach more than one million career and volunteer fire service professionals each year. The organization meets twice each year: as noted, the spring meeting is held at FDIC; the fall meeting is hosted by a state or provincial fire training agency. Attendees are very active on national committees and in supporting and working with the National Fire Academy (NFA). The meetings allow the group to ensure that it is meeting its members’ needs and that the organization is fully supporting the work of the NFA and the U.S. Fire Administration.
Eriks began attending FDIC in the early 1980s, when FDIC was held in Cincinnati. “Attending training sessions that address firefighter safety and survival issues as well as visiting the vendor area, Eriks says, “allow me to learn what is being done in training and equipment/technology to ensure that our firefighters are prepared for the challenges they will face in their local communities.”
