Narrow Escape of Chiif Davidson
An explosion of gas caused a fire in a bicycle shop in Denver, Col. The flames slowly reached the roof in the inside, but kept smoldering and did not burst through it. Assistant Chief Robert Davidson was on the outside of the roof and was directing the hosemen to tear a hole in it, with a view to pouring a stream down through it and dissipating the poisonous gases from the oils and combustibles that rendered it almost impossible for the firemen to work in the ininterior of the shop. The action of the smoldering flames, however, had so weakened the timbers that without any warning a section of the root caved in and Chief Davidson fell with it, striking bis head against a beam in his downward course. He was temporarily stunned and lay helpless amid the burning mass. Two of bis men jumped in afterwards and. grabbing hold of his body, hoisted it up to the men above them and saved aim front death either from suffocation or the flames. Although he was badly cut and bruised and battered and singed, as were also bis rescuers, the trio went to work again as if nothing out of due course had happened.
