New Albany Fire Department Criticised

The appointment of a governing committee to take charge of the New Albany, Ind., fire department was adopted at a recent meeting of the City Council when the Committe on Fire Department filed a report, in which the fire department was severely criticised. The report declared the department was in a deplorable condition, that the loss of horses in accident was due to incompetent drivers and that more care should be exercised in selecting them. The committee declared the department should be taken out of politics and suggested that a committee of three be appointed to take charge, one to be appointed by the Mayor, one by the Council and one by the Chamber of Commerce; that all firemen be selected according to qualifications as firemen and not as civil service experts, and not subject to removal because of political affiliations.
