NEW BATTALION CHIEF FOR NEW YORK.

Foreman George L. Ross, of engine company No. 19, Manhattan, has just been advanced to the rank of chief of battalion by Commissioner John J. Seannell, of this city’s fire department. He will succeed Battalion Chief William J. Cook, who will retire on July 16. Chief Ross was a cashier when he was made a fireman of the third class on December 23. 1886. He was made assistant foreman on January 1,1894, and foreman on December 1, 1897.

Marshalltown, la., is to have a new sewage-disposal plant.
