NEW FIRE CHIEF IN DURHAM IS ELECTED

Durham, N. C.—Confronted with a written resignation from Fire Chief Dennis C. Christian, the city manager and police and fire committee of the board of aldermen, have elected Frank Bennett, to succeed him.

The change of chiefs for the department, is the only change worked out by the city executives in their session. It was stated, however, that a number of vacancies are to be filled. This will be accomplished in co-operation with the new chief.

Chief Christain tendered his resignation just prior to the meeting and it was late before the city manager and police and fire committee could get in touch with the newly elected chief. He was notified of the action taken and accepted. It was too late, however, for him to go into conference with the executives regarding further reorganization of the fire department.

In the regular election, the city manager appointed Captain B. C. Cannada, captain for hose company No. 1, and also assistant fire chief. Captain C. H. Turner was re-elected captain of hose company No. 2, and was made second assistant chief. Captain C. A. Whicker was re-elected captain for No. 3 station, and Captain W. P. Brown was re-elected captain for the hook and ladder company. Each captain was instructed to keep his company intact.
