NEW FIREBOAT FOR MILWAUKEE.
The launching of the new fireboat, the Cataract, at the yards of the Manitowoc Dry Dock company, took place on December 2. The new boat, which will serve as an additional protection for Milwaukee, Wis., will cost, when completed, $75,000. She is 106 feet over all, ninety-five-foot keel and twenty-four feet in depth, with a moulded depth of twelve feet. The boat is equipped with two pumps, which will throw 5.000 gallons of water per minute, and has an engine of 500-horsepower. Steel plates encompass her for ice-breaking purposes. She has a speed of thirteen miles an hour and will be delivered at Milwaukee in three weeks. A new feature of the boat is that it is equipped with a telescopic water tower, extending forty-five feet above the deck, capable of throwing a two and a half-inch stream in an almost vertical line. The Cataract is the first steel boat to be equipped with this water tower, and it is expected to be of great value.
