New Ladder Truck for Valparaiso
The city of Valparaiso, Chile, will soon be in possession of its new Mack ladder truck, whcih has been shipped to it by the International Motor Company. This truck has many features which make it especially fit for the service intended. One of these features is an electric heater which keeps the motor at an efficient starting temperature. This heater is attached to the inlet manifold which keeps water warm around the cylinders, manifold and oil reservoir while the machine is idle in the fire house. Heater can be readily attached to any electric light plug in the fire house. The heated thermosyphons through the whole circulating system, insuring proper lubrication the instant the motor starts. This truck is also equipped with a special Mack “AC” fire department type motor, which will function efficiently at the excessive speed required of fire department apparatus. As the truck has a 20 foot wheelbase, it will accommodate ladders up to 30 feet in length. The ladder equipment is herewith given. One 60 and one 45 foot trussed extension ladder; two 25, two 20 and two 16-foot single wall ladders; one 12 and two 14-foot roof ladders equipped with folding hooks, two 15-foot manila rope ladders.
The fire fighting equipment is complete in every detail and the lighting equipment is electric, the motor being equipped with a motor starter and electric generator. One swivel electric searchlight and two head lights furnish ample light for effective night work. The motor is equipped with a double ignition system which insures against a dead motor caused by ignition trouble. This high speed motor permits of a speed of 35 miles per hour.
