New Meterage Rates in Reading, Pa.
An ordinance before the Reading, Pa., City Council favors the use of meters by house owners and it makes material reduction in the rates for private house owners who are users of meters, and a number of reductions also in the rates for those who pay by fixture. The bill will reduce somewhat the total water revenues of the city, but the saving in water is expected to offset the loss in revenue. The cut in rates for individual house owners who install meters is considerable and is expected to result in many applications for meter service, instead of service by fixture charges. It adopted the provisions of the bill as regards water rates will be effective as of April 6, and the meter rates as of April 1. The rate for the consumption of water in all properties to be supplied with a meter shall be four cents per 100 cubic feet. In addition to the above rate for the consumption of water in metered properties, the following meter rentals shall be paid by the owner or consumer: For 1/2-inch meter, 20 cents per month; for 3/4-inch meter, 25 cents per month; 1-inch meter, 30 cents per month; 1 1/2-inch meter, 35 cents per month; 2-inch meter, 40 cents per month; 3-inch meter, 55 cents per -month; 4-inch meter, $1 per month; 6-inch meter, $2 per month; 8-inch meter, $3 per month. Under the new meter rates both householder and manufacturer will be paying the same rate, 4 cents for 100 cubic feet. The small consumers’ bill will show a big decrease, while the large consumer’s bill will be larger. The fixture rates are also decreased, but it is only a small decrease, approximately 50 cents to $1 a year, according to the fixtures.
