New Orleans Advertises Its Pure Water

The New Orleans Association of Commerce has adopted a novel idea for the purpose of advertising that city’s healthful water supply, and it believes that the remarkable water system is one feature of that city’s civic life that cannot be over exploited. The method used is the distribution of individual drinking cups bearing an inscription which calls attention to the purity of the New Orleans water. A number of these cups were forwarded to the mayor of the city, and in acknowledging their receipt Mayor Behrman said he heartily approved of the plan which had been adopted by the Association of Commerce. In the letter which was sent to the mayor the officers of the association wrote among other things the following: “It is a well known fact to us, and we intend to make it a well known fact to the country at large, that New Orleans, by an accurate comparison of statistics, is one of the healthiest cities in the United States. During the month of May just past, the city board of health reports that the mortality for white residents dropped as low as 12.23 per one thousand, which comes very near equalling the best in the entire country. You will note that we have printed this fact on the container in which the sanitary drinking cup is placed, in addition to advertising the fact that New Orleans has not only crystal clear and absurdly cheap water, but that it is free from the typhoid and other germs. You will also note that we have called attention to the fact that the pure water system of New Orleans is owned and operated by the municipality.”
