New Plant of the Firestone Company.
The illustration herewith shows the new rim plant of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company at Akron, Ohio. This fine structure, which adjoins the old plant, has been completed and is now in operation, turning out rims of all kinds for automobile, motor trucks and carriages. The president of the Firestone company states that the prices charged for rims have been too high and were utterly unwarranted by the manufacturing cost. He added that a readjustment of prices will save the industtry more than $500,000 the coming year, hew people realize that practically 10 per cent, of the wheel equipment is rims alone, and that more than $2,500,000 is spent on them each year.
The starting of the new rim plant had been kept a secret until it was fully equipped with the latest types of machines for rolling, shaping, electric welding and galvanizing. As soon as the mammoth new tire plant, now in the course of construction, is completed most of the tire manufacturing will be moved thither, leaving the present factory for additional rim machinery and giving the Firestone company the greatest capacity of any exclusive rim manufacturer in the country.
