NEW ROCHELLE COMMISSIONERS SEEK TO RAISE PAY OF FIREMEN.
The entire Board of Fire Commissioners, of New Rochelle, N. Y., appeared before the Board of Estimate a few days ago to protest against the action of the mayor and others in not granting increases in pay to Engineer Edward Kershaw, Superintendent of Fire Alarm John Bell, Clerk George J. P. Hyatt and ten of the older paid firemen. Commissioner John P. Nestler pointed out that all the increase the commissioners had asked for was seven hundred dollars and stated that while Superintendent Bell had not received an increase in twenty years, his work had been steadily increasing in this time. Engineer Kershaw, he said, was one of the most efficient men in the department and referring to the ten paid men, to whom the commissioners want to give a raise of forty dollars a year, he said that now the paid men in the department are more than drivers, saying they were real fire fighters. The matter was taken under consideration by the Board of Estimate.
