NEW YORK BUILDING CODE REVISION.

The commission on the revision of the building code of New York city, has left the matter ot fire limits to the board of aldermen as a whole and suggested many changes in the law regarding fireproofing, concrete, steel and iron construction. The report, which had been held over for two weeks, may not be accepted. It divides buildings into six classes: Public and quasi-public buildings used for any purpose, religious or other; theatres and all places of entertainment accommodating over 300 persons and requiring foot lights or special lights, platform, etc.; residences, including all buildings in which sleeping accommodation is provided; mercantile and manufacturing buildings; special hazard buildings, including. among others, printing offices; all buildings not included in the above classes, such as slaughterhouses, grain elevators, etc. Shingle or or other combustible roofs are forbidden, and no non-fireproof building, unless of mill construction, used for mercantile or manufacturing purposes shall exceed 60 ft. in height, nor shall am fireproof building used for such nurposes exceed ico. ft. in height, unless strictly fireproof and equiped with automatic sprinklers, etc. The height in that case must net exceed 150 ft. Fireproof buildings used for office and hotel purposes may be 200 ft. high; if with offsets, yards or courts in excess of what is required by this code, then that height may be exceeded to the point that the cubage of the building measured above the mean street grade level may be 174 times the area of the lot. Buildings of mill construction and reinforced concrete are limited to 85 fi. in height, and. in future, all dwellinghouses higher and. in future, all dwelling houses higher than than 40 ft. shall have the first flr or above the cellar constructed of fireproof material, and any kind of word approved hy the building department may be used for interior trim in a building not exceeding TOO ft. in height. Tf they are higher, no interior trim may be of combustible material. Garages are to be of fireproof construction only.
